ZikuaŽ The Eco BadgeŽ Test Card Reader
Zikua®
(pronounced Zee Koo Ah)
In 1993, a group of students retraced a portion of the route that Dr. Stanley took in his search for Livingston. Vistanomics had donated Eco BadgeŽ Kits to them to learn firsthand if ozone air pollution was a problem in the
African continent.
They learned that air pollution did exist there. Curious as to its causes (they were not in heavily populated
urban areas with heavy vehicular traffic nor were there electric power plants fueled by coal in their vicinity)
the issue confused and confounded them.
They met a farmer, and showed him the badge and how it
worked. The farmer responded, "you are revealing the
invisible."
Later, because of this story, the company slogan for
Vistanomics became "Visualizing the Invisible." In
Swahili, the language spoken by the farmer, "Zikua" means
to reveal or to visualize, and "Kuvizikua visivyooneKana"
means visualizing the invisible.
And upon the student's returnm they learned the cause
of the pollution - biomass
burning. But that's another story.
